Greening Up the Mountains 5K

  • This 5K is held on the fourth Saturday in April, in conjunction with the annual spring festival, Greening Up the Mountains. This is a flat, fun, and family friendly event. Registration begins in early February. Registration fee is $15.00 pre-registered, and $20.00 on race day. Registration - Click Here

Easter Egg Hunt

  • This is an Easter themed event open to ages ten and under. It is held the Saturday before Easter weekend. Come early for pictures with the bunny before the egg hunt begins. Prizes are awarded for finders of the “golden egg”, but treats are inside all the other eggs. This event is free.

Carpenter Classic Golf Tournament

  • Annual golf tournament held at Trillium Links and Lake Club. Held the first Monday in October. All proceeds go towards helping Smoky Mountain Senior Games and also the Jackson County Special Olympics. For more information or to register please contact either one of our Recreation Centers. 

Kids Learn to Fish Day

  • Fish Day is held the first Saturday in June. Open to ages seven through thirteen. North Carolina Sportsman’s Association, as well as the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, offer a casting and BIG fish contest with the opportunity for children to catch their very own trout from Cullowhee Creek. Registration is taken the month of May. This is a free event. 

Run in 5K Run, Walk, & Fun Run

  • This annual 5K is held on New Year’s Day at 11:00 a.m. starting at the Cullowhee Recreation Center. This annual 5K is a great way to start the year off in an active and healthy way! Registration begins in early November. Registration fee is $20.00 pre-registered, and $25.00 on race day.

Disc Golf Tournament

  • Multiple tournaments will be hosted throughout the calendar year at the Cullowhee Recreation Center. Registration fee for singles is $5.00, and doubles is $10.00. All ages and skills levels are welcome.

Summer Walking Program

  • The SUMMER WALKING PROGRAM is for all ages. This program aims to reward anyone who regularly walks to improve their health. Each participant is responsible for recording the amount of miles they travel in the months of June and July and turning it in to Molly Neary at the Cullowhee Recreation Center. Registration for this program is free. Register and pick up a packet at the front desk of the Recreation Center.

Pumpkin Patch

  • This is a Halloween themed special event. It will be held Wednesday, October 31st from 5:30pm until 7:30pm at Bridge Park in downtown Sylva. It will be held in conjunciton with Treat Street. This free event is open to all youth under the age of 10. Various community groups will have booths and will pass out candy and treats to participants. No registration is taken for this program.

Ski/Snowboard Lessons

  • Downhill Ski/Snowboard Lessons are open to everyone ages 8 and above. The Parks and Recreation Department partners with Cataloochee Ski Resort in Maggie Valley to offer participants the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard at a discounted rate. Lessons are taught on Sunday afternoons in January and February for 5 weeks. Your lift ticket is valid from 12:30-4:30pm and lessons are taught from 2:00-3:30pm. If you have never skied or snowboarded or just want to brush up on some new tricks, the Cataloochee Ski School has an instructor just for your skill level. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Ski Resort.
